THE OFFSPRING – “Conspiracy Of One” compie 20 anni!

In occasione del suo ventesimo anniversario, il sesto album dei pionieri del punk rock The Offspring, Conspiracy Of One sarà di nuovo disponibile in vinile, per la prima volta dopo la pubblicazione avvenuta nel 2000. L’11 dicembre Round Hill Records/UMe pubblicheranno via Caroline International la versione deluxe di Conspiracy Of One su vinile giallo e rosso splatter, con copertina lucida sul disegno e il panno per giradischi personalizzato con l’iconico logo della band: il teschio in fiamme. Un’altra variante in edizione limitata non deluxe su vinile giallo sarà disponibile su uDiscover & The Sound Of Vinyl. La versione standard su vinile nero sarà pubblicata a inizio 2021. Tutte le versioni includeranno la bonus track “Huck It”. Il brano era originariamente presente nella cassetta e nel DVD Huck It pubblicati nel 2000 ed è stato la colonna sonora di diverse acrobazie del batterista Ron Welty sullo skate. “Huck It” sarà pubblicata come singolo su tutte le piattaforme digitali il 13 novembre. Inoltre, i video dei primi due singoli estratti da Conspiracy Of One “Original Prankster” e “Want You Bad” saranno disponibili in HD sul canale YouTube della band.

Conspiracy Of One, il primo album che gli Offspring hanno pubblicato nel 21esimo secolo, è stato il quarto album della band che ha rivoluzionato il punk ad essere certificato platino ad un solo mese dalla pubblicazione il 14 novembre 2000. L’album è noto per il suo primo singolo “Original Prankster”, finito in cima alla Top 100 di Billboard e al #2 dell’Alternative Airplay Chart negli Stati Uniti. Il singolo e il suo video irriverente diretto da Dave Meyers includono un campione funky del brano “Low Rider” dei War e un cameo della leggenda dell’hip hop Redman. Il secondo singolo “Want You Bad” è stato inserito nella colonna sonora di American Pie 2 e del videogioco Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller.

Sull’album, Dexter Holland ha raccontato: “When we put Conspiracy of One out in 2000, Bill Clinton was still President, and September 11 hadn’t happened yet. However, it was obvious that tensions were rising in the Middle East, and we could all sense that acts of terrorism were on the rise, both domestically and internationally.  In the U.S., we had all experienced the tragedy of the Oklahoma City bombing and had only recently apprehended the Unabomber, while internationally, there were instances of terrorism such as the sarin nerve gas attack in Japan, suicide bombing attacks in Chechnya, and the bombing of the USS Cole. It occurred to us that this was going to be a new way of waging war going forward.  While in the past, nations were generally attacked by other nations – army vs. army – we realized that the world was changing and that future attacks against our country were just as likely to occur by an individual or a small group…a ‘Conspiracy of One’. Of course, we had no idea what was in store for us on September 11, 2001, or how our title portended things to come”.

“Conspiracy of One seemed to come together pretty quickly, compared to some of other records,” said Noodles.  “It was our first time recording with Brendan O’Brien, and we learned a lot from him about how to get the sounds we were looking for. We still play ‘Prankster’ & ‘Want You Bad’ from this record, almost every show, and we’d like to add more to the set. ‘Come Out Swinging’ & ‘Million Miles Away’ always stoke the fans, and ‘Special Delivery’ was such a dynamic & fun part of our set when we played it back then. I still love all these songs”.

Per la prima volta, in Conspiracy Of One, gli Offspring hanno inserito il loro logo sulla copertina di un album. L’illustrazione di Alan Forbes diventata adesso iconica è finita su un inimmaginabile numero di maglie, adesivi, tatuaggi e, da poco, anche su un veicolo del videogioco online World Of Tanks. La prima collaborazione con il produttore Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine) Conspiracy Of One cattura il pop-punk che da sempre contraddistingue gli Offspring (“Come Out Swinging”, the 99-second “All Along”) e anche alcuni esperimenti di genere (il bridge di “Special Delivery” riprende l’ ‘ooga-chaka’ della versione del 1974 di “Hooked on a Feeling” dei Blue Swede).

“Alan Forbes is a fantastic graphic artist who did the artwork on Conspiracy of One and ‘Huck It’, ha aggiunto Dexter. “We had been fans of his work for years and were thrilled to have him help us with our album package. Part of our conversations with Alan were about how it would be cool to have an official Offspring band logo.  We worked together and came up with the ‘flaming skull.’ It’s been our logo ever since!”

Con oltre 40 milioni di copie vendute in tutto il mondo, i The Offspring sono tra i principali esponenti della scena punk rock. La band, fondata nel 1985, include il cantante Dexter Holland e il chitarrista Noodles a cui, per tutti gli anni ’90, si sono uniti il bassista Greg K e il batterista Ron Welty. Smash, il loro terzo album pubblicato nel 1994 che li ha portati al successo e includeva “Come Out And Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)” e “Self Esteem” è il disco pubblicato da un’etichetta indipendente più venduto di sempre ed è stato certificato sei volte platino. La band ha in programma la partecipazione ad alcuni festival europei per l’estate 2021.
